How to use pinecones for Christmas decorations?

Pine cones are the essence of Christmas and the winter months, they are a lovely way to bring a natural charm and a timeless feel to seasonal decorating.

Pine cones grow on many different types of trees, called Conifers, and they come in all different sizes and shapes.  Some cones will surprise you.
The Giant California Redwood Trees have tiny cones that are barely an inch long!  Sugar Pine Trees (which are dwarves next to the California Redwoods), on the other hand, produce cones that are anywhere from 1 to 2 feet long!  Some varieties of cones have a closed appearance, others spread their scales wide.  Some cones are prickly, others are smooth.  When they are still attached to the trees, pine cones close up in the rain and open up on a dry sunny day to air out.

No matter what species they are, cones are unique, beautiful, and can be used in many ways. There can be part of creative crafts waiting to be made into something amazing or decorated on their own.
